How often do you make changes in your LinkedIn profile? When was the last time that you added information about a project you have worked on, included a presentation or asked for a recommendation? If you are actively using LinkedIn, for example by sharing posts or by participating in discussions in LinkedIn groups, and if you want to use LinkedIn to establish new contacts and find new clients, then it is important that your profile is 100% up-to-date. Ideally you should aim for a profile strength at ‘All-Star Level’. In this blog I will share the three most common mistakes made in LinkedIn profiles. The good news is that it doesn’t take much time to correct them.
1. What does your professional headline tell?
After your picture, your professional headline is the first thing that people will look at when they check out your profile. Don’t limit yourself to just the title of your position, but use relevant keywords that people use when they are looking for people like you. You can use up to 120 characers (including the spaces between the letters.)
2. Do you have enough relevant recommendations?
A recommendation is more than just some positive feedback from your boss, former colleagues or clients. They describe how people who have worked with you see you, while describing this in their own words. Once you have collected a certain number of recommendations, people will have quite a good picture of how others perceive you and what your core capabilities are. Make sure that you have at least five recommendations for your current position and several for other key positions you had in the past.
3. Do people know how to contact you?
I am surprised how many people still don’t have all relevant contact details listed under “Contact information”. This is were people search if they look for the website address of your company or organization. You can include up to 3 url’s, so why not include the url of your homepage, one that leads straight to your blog and one to your Facebook or LinkedIn company page (simply click on the drop down menu under websites)?
In addition, don’t forget to include your email address and mobile number, and if applicable, your Twitter address.
How do you score on these three aspects?
